Definition: Dyspareunia is the medical term for painful sexual intercourse. While there are many causes of dyspareunia, vaginal dryness is one of the most common causes. Other causes of pain during sex include vaginal infections such as trichomoniasis, vaginal irritation, genital herpes sores, vaginal tightness, clitoral pain, or painful pelvic conditions such as endometriosis, benign uterine fibroids, and ovarian cysts.

Pain is never normal during sexual intercourse. If you experience dyspareunia, contact your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
