If you're experiencing excessive or heavy uterine bleeding, your physician has several treatment options she or he may try. Both medical and surgical treatments are available for treating this menstrual cycle disorder, which is also called menorrhagia or anovulatory bleeding. However, surgical treatments are reserved only for women who have been unsuccessful with medical treatments and who do not desire future pregnancy.
Medical treatments for excessive uterine bleeding include:
- Oral contraceptives or progestins usually produce effective results for women who experience chronic menorrhagia.
- High-dose estrogen therapy using conjugated equine estrogens, sold by the brand name Premarin. This therapy is useful for acute bleeding, or the first time you experience abnormal uterine bleeding.
- Women, who are perimenopausal and experiencing hot flashes, as well as excessive uterine bleeding, may be treated with hormone replacement therapy on a cyclic schedule.
