You can stop menstrual cramps before they start, or reduce the severity of menstrual cramps, by taking OTC pain medications such as acetaminophen, or NSAIDs which include ibuprofen, ketoprofen, naproxen, and aspirin at the first sign of pain or menstrual bleeding. Many doctors recommend taking these medications up to 24 hours before you expect your period.
