Definition: Abnormal uterine bleeding that occurs without ovulation taking place. Anovulatory bleeding is also known as dysfunctional uterine bleeding, or DUB. This type of bleeding is abnormal uterine bleeding, not menstrual bleeding.

There are no specific guidelines regarding the amount of blood loss during anovulatory bleeding, or the length of time this type of abnormal uterine bleeding lasts. Blood flow can be anything from brief and spotting to excessively heavy or long lasting. Anovulatory bleeding occurs irregularly.
