Definition: Almond-shaped endocrine system glands found in females, one on each side of the uterus

The ovaries produce the female hormones estrogen and progesterone, as well as a small amount of testosterone. Each ovary has thousands of follicles capable of producing eggs for fertilization. Although only one egg usually fully matures during ovulation, between 10 and 20 follicles begin to mature during each monthly menstrual cycle.
